Just over 10 km from Europe, Morocco is the complete opposite of the continent on the other side of the Bay of Gibraltar. The royal cities, with their hustle and bustle on the one hand, and reddish deserts with lots of dunes and hilly regions on the other hand, reveal numerous characteristics and contrasts of this North African country.
The High Atlas lies in the east of Morocco and is, above all, a unique mountain range that stretches gently in the east-west direction for a length of 2400 km. Morocco trekking includes the highest peak, Jebel Toubkal, which is also the highest peak in North Africa. The nomadic Berber people live in a complex and sometimes hostile mountain world. The starting point for mountain tours in the Atlas is the city of Marrakesh, full of African temperament. The surrounding landscape is sparsely populated and extremely rugged. The Sahara, one of the largest deserts in the world, stretches on the southern and eastern sides of the mountains. The view of the snowy Atlas with the reddish desert in the lowlands is something truly unique.
Morocco
Morocco offers attractions and adventures to all ready for exoticism spiced with snake charmers, with countless squares full of treasures and the smell of mint tea. Morocco offers practically everything – from the coast of the Mediterranean Sea, the desert, the Atlantic coast, oases, and the beauty of the Atlas Mountains. Morocco is a journey to peaceful and beautiful coastal villages, colorful cities, and fortresses, like from the story of 1001 Nights. Morocco is the natural meeting place of Africa and the Arab world, and it is nothing unusual for it to enchant you again and again, as it enchanted many famous writers, poets, and artists before you.
The Lifetrek agency has been traveling to Morocco every year for several years. Every year, we make several trips and, of course, trekking with the ascent of Toubkal. We have to adjust the trekking a little from time to time because if the snow line drops, we change the trekking route a little. Regardless of the route change, the trek’s goal will still be to conquer Mount Toubkal. In case of snow on the way up, we order crampons to the cabin because mules carry our luggage, but if snow is predicted, you can bring crampons from home, as there will be no additional luggage.
Transfer to Imlil, where we will spend the night in a beautiful guesthouse.
After breakfast, we will buy the last little things and load the equipment into our mules. The route will lead us to Tacheddirt, about 8 km from Imlil. We will drive over the Tamatert pass (2279 m) and soon reach the starting point of our trekking. We start with a steep ascent to the Likemet pass (3555 m, three h). At the top, we will have a fantastic view of the Toubkal massif. After the ascent, there is a descent (3 hours) to the village of Azib Likmet, where we will spend the night (sleeping in tents).
This day will be long but easy. The road will lead us through a colorful landscape. From the saddle of Ououraine (3210 m), we will see the peak of Toubkal for the first time. In the afternoon, we will reach the village of Amsouzert, where we will spend the night in simple village huts (7h).
West of Amsouzert, there are many small villages that we will explore on the way to Lake Ifni, the only lake in this area. We will arrive there in time for lunch and enjoy the afternoon by the lake shore. We will spend the night in a tent or a stone house near the lake.
By this point, we will have acclimatized well so that we won’t have any problems with the altitude. The start of this stage is early in the morning due to the southern position of the slope we are climbing. There is an ascent from the lake to the Ouanoums pass (3664 m), followed by a descent to the Neltner hut, where we arrive around 2 p.m. Sleeping in the cabin.
Before dawn, we will take the well-trodden path towards the highest peak of the Atlas. With favorable conditions, we will reach the top of Jebel Toubkal in four hours and enjoy a fantastic view of the entire Atlas and Marrakech below us at the top. Next is the descent to the hut. Another four hours of walking will follow to Imlil, where we will spend the night with the locals.
From Imlil, after breakfast, we leave for Marrakesh, where we arrive around noon and check into a hotel in the old part of Marrakesh near Jema Square. In the afternoon, a short tour of the city and the market. You can use the evening for a traditional Moroccan bath with massage (Hamam)—dinner at a local restaurant.
If time permits, we will visit the main attractions and the market for a few hours. End of Program.
*We reserve the right to change the Morocco program with trekking and climbing Toubkal, as long as it is not significantly shortened. Also, the Morocco program with trekking and climbing Toubkal can be changed due to weather conditions, logistics (changed timetable of regular lines, accommodation facilities), and other reasons. Transportation on regular lines (air/bus/ship) can be done without an agency escort.
