Ski from the summit of a volcano down to the Arctic Ocean.

Iceland is becoming one of the world’s premier destinations for ski touring, and for good reason. There are few places on Earth where you can ski uninterrupted from a 1200m peak right down to the black sandy shore of the Atlantic. Our Ski Touring Iceland program focuses on the famous Troll Peninsula (Tröllaskagi) in the North, a playground of jagged peaks, deep fjords, and vast slopes that hold snow late into the spring.

This Land Only adventure is designed for experienced skiers who want to earn their turns. We stay in a comfortable lodge or guesthouse in the north, using our private vehicle to chase the best snow conditions each day. After a day of climbing and skiing, we relax in geothermal hot pools, surrounded by the snowy wilderness. This is backcountry skiing at its most unique.

Tour Type: Ski Touring / Ski Mountaineering

What to Expect

Ski touring in Iceland is a wilderness experience.

  • The Terrain: We ski in the Troll Peninsula. The mountains rise up to 1500m directly from the sea. Expect varied snow conditions—from powder (if fresh snow falls) to perfect spring “corn” snow (firn).
  • Fitness Level: You should be comfortable climbing 800m to 1200m of vertical elevation per day and skiing in varied off-piste conditions.
  • The Vibe: We operate as a team. We cook breakfast and dinner together in our lodge, check the avalanche forecast, and plan the next day’s route over a cold Icelandic beer.
  • Weather: Arctic weather changes fast. We might start in sunshine and finish in a snowstorm. Good layering and goggles are essential.
  • Flexibility: We have a vehicle, so we ski where the snow is best. If the weather is bad in one fjord, we drive to the next one.
Itinerary

Day 1Arrival & Journey to the North

Arrival at Keflavík International Airport (KEF). We load our ski bags into our private minibus and begin the journey north. The drive takes approximately 5–6 hours, passing through the undersea tunnel of Hvalfjörður and across the highland moors. We arrive at our base in the Troll Peninsula (near Dalvík or Siglufjörður), our home for the week. We settle in, check gear, and prepare for the first turns.

Day 2Skiing the Home Fjord

We start with a “warm-up” tour close to our base to assess the snowpack and group ability. A classic objective might be the slopes above Dalvík, offering spectacular views over Eyjafjörður. We aim for a summit of around 800–1000m. The descent offers wide, open slopes leading back towards the valley floor. In the afternoon, we can visit the local swimming pool to soak in the hot tubs.

Day 3Siglufjörður & The Northern Tips

We drive further north to the historic herring town of Siglufjörður. The mountains here are steeper and more dramatic. We might target peaks like Ilviðrishnjúkur or Hestskarðshnjúkur. The skiing here often feels like you are hovering directly above the ocean. After skiing, we can explore the colorful harbor town, which feels like the edge of the world.

Day 4Summit to Sea – The Classic Run

Today we aim for a true “Summit to Sea” classic. Depending on conditions, we might head to the Ólafsfjörður area or the majestic Kaldbakur (1173m) if snowmobiles/cats aren’t operating, or finding a pristine line on the Peninsula’s many unnamed peaks. The goal is to ski a continuous line that ends within walking distance of the beach. It’s a bucket-list experience for any skier.

Day 5Exploring Hidden Valleys

We venture deeper into the peninsula’s interior valleys, such as Svarfaðardalur or Skíðadalur. These valleys hold snow well into late spring and offer majestic alpine scenery that resembles the Alps but with an Arctic twist. We skin up past frozen waterfalls and remote farmsteads to reach high ridges with panoramic views of the entire peninsula.

Day 6The Grand Finale

For our final ski day, we tackle a major objective or hunt for the best “corn snow” (spring snow) on the south-facing slopes. By late April, the sun softens the snow surface by midday, creating perfect, ego-boosting skiing conditions. We celebrate our last turns with a high-five at the bottom and perhaps a visit to the famous Beer Spa (Bjórböðin) in Árskógssandur (optional) on the way back.

Day 7Return to the South & Golden Circle

We pack up and begin the drive back to the south. To break up the journey, we stop at the famous sights of the Golden Circle: the Geysir geothermal area and the roaring Gullfoss waterfall. It’s a stark contrast to the solitude of the north. We arrive in Reykjavík/Keflavík area in the evening for a final farewell dinner.

Day 8Departure

Transfer to Keflavík International Airport (KEF) for your flight home. (One group transfer provided). You leave with tired legs and unforgettable memories of skiing the Arctic.

  • Summit to Sea: The unique thrill of skiing from a mountain peak all the way down to the ocean shore.
  • Troll Peninsula: Iceland’s capital of backcountry skiing, offering endless terrain and breathtaking fjord views.
  • Midnight Sun Skiing: In late April/May, the days are incredibly long, allowing for late afternoon or even evening runs in the golden light.
  • Geothermal Pools: Soaking tired legs in natural hot springs or local swimming pools after a long day on the mountain.
  • Akureyri: Visiting the “Capital of the North,” a charming town nestled at the head of Iceland’s longest fjord.
  • Golden Circle: (Time permitting on the last day) A quick stop to see the Geysir and Gullfoss before flying out.

Ski Touring Iceland: The Ultimate Arctic Adventure

Imagine standing on a snowy peak, breathing in the crisp Arctic air, and looking down at a deep blue fjord where whales might be breaching. Then, imagine clicking into your bindings and skiing a continuous, untouched line of snow all the way down to the water’s edge. This is ski touring in Iceland. It is not just a sport; it is an immersion into a landscape that feels primal, raw, and utterly magnificent.

The Troll Peninsula: A Skier’s Paradise

While Iceland has many mountains, the Troll Peninsula (Tröllaskagi) in the North is the undisputed king of Icelandic skiing. This mountainous peninsula, located between the fjords of Skagafjörður and Eyjafjörður, receives massive amounts of snow and holds it longer than anywhere else on the island. The terrain is perfectly suited for touring: peaks ranging from 800m to 1500m offering moderately steep, consistent pitches that are fun rather than terrifying. The lack of trees means the entire mountain is your canvas—you can choose your line freely, chasing the best snow and the best views.

Spring Skiing: The Magic Season

Our tours run in April and May, the prime “spring skiing” season in Iceland.

  • Stability: By spring, the snowpack has generally stabilized, allowing access to steeper lines and bigger objectives.
  • Daylight: The days are incredibly long. In April, you have 14–16 hours of light; by May, it’s nearly 20 hours. This means no “alpine starts” in the dark. We can enjoy a leisurely breakfast and ski late into the afternoon when the sun softens the snow into perfect “corn.”
  • Corn Snow: Iceland is famous for its corn snow—a cycle where the sun melts the top layer of snow during the day, and it refreezes at night. Timing your descent perfectly creates a smooth, velvet-like skiing surface that makes you feel like a hero.

Summit to Sea

The “Summit to Sea” experience is what draws skiers from around the globe to Iceland. In the Alps or Rockies, you ski from a peak to a valley floor. In Iceland, the ocean is the valley floor. Seeing the contrast of white snow against the dark blue Atlantic Ocean and the black volcanic sand beaches is a visual overload. There are runs where you literally unclip your skis a few meters from the surf.

Après-Ski, Icelandic Style

Forget loud bars and disco music. In Iceland, après-ski means geothermal water. The region is dotted with natural hot springs and municipal swimming pools heated by volcanic energy. There is arguably no better recovery for sore muscles than sitting in a 40°C hot tub with your ski partners, watching the steam rise into the cold air and recounting the day’s adventures. We also embrace the local culture, staying in cozy lodges or guesthouses and enjoying fresh local fish and lamb.

Why “Land Only”?

Skiers are particular about their travel. Our Land Only package allows you to bring your own ski gear without worrying about group flight baggage restrictions. You can choose the airline that offers the best policy for ski bags (like Icelandair or SAS). We handle the critical logistics on the ground: the 4×4 transport capable of navigating snowy passes, the accommodation in the best ski zones, and, most importantly, the expert guiding to keep you safe in avalanche terrain.

Join LifeTrek for a ski trip like no other. Whether you are a seasoned ski mountaineer or an intermediate tourer looking for something different, Iceland offers a skiing experience that is pure, wild, and beautiful.
