Welcome to Iceland! You arrive at Keflavík International Airport (KEF). Our group transfer collects you and takes you to our first accommodation, typically located in the Selfoss or Hella area, which serves as a great base for exploring the South. We gather for a welcome meeting, check our gear, and buy groceries for the week. The evening is free to relax and get to know your fellow hikers.
We start with Iceland’s most famous sights. We hike behind the curtain of water at Seljalandsfoss and marvel at the power of Skógafoss. We then head to the coast to walk on the famous black sand beach of Reynisfjara, with its basalt column caves and Reynisdrangar sea stacks. We end the day with a scenic drive towards the Vatnajökull region.
Today we explore Skaftafell, part of the vast Vatnajökull National Park. We hike up to Svartifoss (The Black Fall), surrounded by dark hexagonal basalt columns. We continue our hike to the viewpoint of Sjónarnípa for a breathtaking panoramic view of the massive glacier tongue stretching down from the ice cap. It’s a day of ice and green birch forests.
We travel off the beaten path to Thakgil (Þakgil), a secluded canyon located between the Mýrdalsjökull glacier and the black sands. This area is a hiker’s paradise, featuring jagged green peaks and mysterious rock formations that look like something out of “Lord of the Rings.” We spend the day hiking these quiet trails, far from the tourist crowds.
A true highlight of the trip! We take a 4×4 bus into the interior highlands to Landmannalaugar. The landscape here is surreal: mountains painted in shades of red, green, yellow, and blue by rhyolite rock. We hike through the lava fields of Laugahraun and up to the Brennisteinsalda volcano. After the hike, we reward ourselves with a soak in the natural hot river.
Depending on weather and group energy, we tackle another exciting trail. We might hike the first section of the Laugavegur trail towards the ice caves of Hrafntinnusker, or explore the foothills of the famous Eyjafjallajökull volcano. This day is dedicated to experiencing the raw, volcanic nature of the highlands before we head back towards civilization.
We return towards the capital via the famous Golden Circle. We watch the Strokkur geyser erupt, admire the two-tiered Gullfoss waterfall, and walk between the tectonic plates at Thingvellir National Park. We arrive in Reykjavík in the late afternoon, with time to explore the city center and enjoy a farewell dinner.
Our journey ends today. A group transfer takes us to Keflavík International Airport (KEF) for flights home. (Note: Only one group transfer provided; please arrange individual transport if your flight time differs significantly).
Iceland is a place that defies description. Often called the “Land of Fire and Ice,” it is a country where the geological heartbeat of the planet is visible at every turn. For hikers, there is simply no better destination on Earth. The varied terrain—from moss-covered lava fields to glistening glaciers, from thundering waterfalls to steaming geothermal vents—offers a sensory experience that is unparalleled.
Our Iceland for Hikers program is specifically crafted for those who want to immerse themselves in this raw nature without the extreme physical demands of a multi-day backpacking expedition. By utilizing a comfortable base and private transport, we can access the most spectacular trailheads each day, carrying only a light daypack. This allows you to focus entirely on the scenery and the experience.
The South Coast
The southern coast of Iceland is iconic for a reason. Here, the massive ice caps of Vatnajökull and Mýrdalsjökull loom over narrow strips of black coastline. Waterfalls like Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss cascade over former sea cliffs, creating misty curtains that are perfect for photography. Walking on the black sand beach of Reynisfjara feels like stepping onto another planet, with the roaring Atlantic waves crashing against the hexagonal basalt columns of the cliffs.
The Highlands: Landmannalaugar
Accessing the interior Highlands is an adventure in itself, requiring 4×4 vehicles to cross unbridged rivers and rugged lava tracks. Landmannalaugar is the jewel of the Highlands. The mountains here are formed of rhyolite, a volcanic rock that creates a dazzling spectrum of colors—reds, pinks, greens, and yellows—that change with the light of the sun. The hiking here takes you through steaming vents and ancient lava flows, culminating in a bath in a natural hot river that mixes boiling geothermal water with a cold mountain stream.
The Hidden Canyon: Thakgil
While the Golden Circle and Skógafoss are famous, Thakgil (Roof Canyon) remains a secret known mostly to locals and avid hikers. Tucked away near the Mýrdalsjökull glacier, this sheltered canyon offers a stark contrast to the windswept coast. The steep, jagged peaks are covered in vivid green moss, creating a dramatic, almost prehistoric atmosphere. The trails here offer silence and solitude, a rare luxury in today’s travel world.
Icelandic weather is famously unpredictable. The local saying goes, “If you don’t like the weather, just wait five minutes.” Even in summer (June to August), temperatures typically range from 10°C to 15°C (50°F–60°F), though they can reach 20°C on sunny days. However, wind and rain are always possibilities. This variability is part of the adventure! The dramatic clouds and shifting light create the moody, atmospheric landscapes that photographers love. Our itinerary is flexible enough to adjust hikes based on the day’s conditions, ensuring we always make the most of the weather.
Choosing a Land Only package gives you the ultimate freedom. You can choose the airline that suits your budget and schedule, use frequent flyer miles, or perhaps extend your stay in Iceland before or after our tour. You might want to spend a few extra days exploring Reykjavík’s museums, cafes, and nightlife, or perhaps rent a car to drive the Ring Road. We take care of all the logistics on the ground—accommodation, transport, guiding, and itinerary—leaving you free to handle the travel arrangements that work best for you.
Iceland sits atop the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, the boundary between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. This geological positioning is responsible for the island’s high level of volcanic activity. During our tour, specifically at Thingvellir National Park, you can literally walk between these two continents. The rift valley here is visible evidence of the earth tearing apart. Throughout the tour, you will see young lava fields, pseudocraters, and volcanic fissures that tell the violent story of Iceland’s creation.
Despite its stark appearance, Iceland is full of life. Summer is the season of the Midnight Sun, where near-24-hour daylight fuels an explosion of plant growth. Purple lupines cover vast swathes of the countryside, while arctic thyme and moss soften the harsh volcanic rock. Birdlife is abundant, especially along the coast where puffins, arctic terns, and fulmars nest in the cliffs. While we hike, keep an eye out for the elusive arctic fox, Iceland’s only native land mammal.
To fully enjoy hiking in Iceland, good gear is essential. “There is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing.” We recommend a three-layer system: a moisture-wicking base layer, a warm insulating middle layer (fleece or wool), and a high-quality waterproof and windproof outer shell (jacket and trousers). Sturdy hiking boots with good ankle support are a must for the uneven terrain. Don’t forget a swimsuit for the hot springs!
Join LifeTrek for an unforgettable journey through one of the world’s last great wildernesses. Whether you are a seasoned hiker or just looking to experience nature in its purest form, Iceland for Hikers offers an accessible, safe, and exhilarating adventure.
