Ski the “Celestial Mountains” where the powder is dry and the culture is nomadic.
Kyrgyzstan is the new frontier for adventurous ski touring. Located in the heart of Central Asia, the Tien Shan (Celestial Mountains) range offers massive vertical relief, deep snowpacks, and a continental climate that produces exceptionally dry, light powder. Unlike the Alps, there are no lift lines here—just endless pristine slopes, silence, and the occasional yurt.
This Land Only program takes you to the eastern Karakol/Jyrgalan region or Suusamyr (depending on the specific base for the season), renowned for its heavy snowfall. We base ourselves in warm, authentic local guesthouses or yurt camps, enjoying hearty Kyrgyz hospitality after long days on the mountain. We use snowmobiles or snowcats (where available/planned) to access remote valleys, or simply earn our turns with skins from the village edge. This is a journey for those who want to combine serious skiing with a deep cultural immersion.
Tour Type: Ski Touring / Ski Mountaineering
Difficulty: Moderate to Demanding (Daily ascents of 800m–1200m)

Kyrgyzstan offers a raw and authentic skiing experience.
Arrival at Manas International Airport (FRU). Our team welcomes you and transfers you to the capital, Bishkek. We begin the journey east along the northern shore of Lake Issyk-Kul, the second-largest alpine lake in the world. The drive takes us through stunning landscapes, passing the Boom Gorge. We arrive at our ski base in the afternoon. We settle into our yurt and prepare for the week ahead.
Spend six full days exploring the untouched slopes of the Tian Shan Mountains. The base camp’s prime location offers numerous starting points, allowing us to maximize ski time without long transfers. Evenings are dedicated to relaxation in the Russian bathhouse and enjoying a warm, freshly prepared dinner.
We load the bus and begin the drive back to Bishkek. We might stop for a quick look at Lake Issyk-Kul and optional eagle hunt demonstration. We arrive in the capital in the late afternoon. You have some free time to visit the Osh Bazaar for souvenirs (spices, felt products) before our farewell dinner.
Transfer to Manas International Airport (FRU) for your flight home. (One group transfer provided). You leave with memories of Central Asian hospitality and deep powder snow.
For skiers who have “done it all”—from the Alps to the Rockies—Kyrgyzstan represents a return to the roots of the sport. There are no ski lifts, no après-ski bars with loud music, and no crowds. Instead, there is the Tien Shan, the “Celestial Mountains,” a range that stretches across Central Asia and offers some of the most accessible yet remote-feeling backcountry skiing in the world. Our Ski Touring Kyrgyzstan program is a journey into a land of nomads, horses, and endless white summits.
Why travel all the way to Central Asia to ski? The answer lies in the snow. Kyrgyzstan is a landlocked country with a continental climate. This means the air is dry and cold, preventing the snow from becoming heavy or wet. The result is a snowpack that often consists of low-density powder—often referred to as “cold smoke”—which stays light and fluffy for days or even weeks after a storm. Skiing through this weightless snow is a sensation that every skier dreams of.
Our tour focuses on the eastern part of the country, specifically the regions around Karakol and the village of Jyrgalan. This area benefits from the “lake effect” of Lake Issyk-Kul. As moisture rises from the massive, never-freezing lake, it hits the towering peaks of the Terskey Ala-Too range and dumps heavy snowfall specifically in these valleys. Jyrgalan, a former coal-mining village turned freeride mecca, is famous for its consistent deep snow and wind-protected tree skiing. The terrain here is perfect for touring: accessible ridges, wide open bowls, and perfectly spaced pine forests for storm days.
Skiing in Kyrgyzstan is as much about the culture as it is about the turns. We stay in local guesthouses or yurt camps, living side-by-side with Kyrgyz families. Hospitality here is legendary. You will be welcomed with endless pots of tea, homemade jams, and fresh bread (“nan”). Dinner is a hearty affair, often featuring Beshbarmak (meat and noodles) or Manty (dumplings), providing the fuel needed for big days in the mountains. We often see locals on horseback navigating the snowy streets, a reminder of the country’s deep nomadic heritage.
While the adventure is raw, safety is our priority. The continental snowpack can be complex, and avalanche conditions are taken very seriously. Our tours are led by professional ski touring guides who are experts in snow science and route selection. We adhere to strict safety protocols, and every participant is required to carry and know how to use avalanche safety gear (beacon, shovel, probe). We focus on finding safe, high-quality snow, adjusting our itinerary daily based on the conditions.
Our Land Only package is designed for the modern adventurer. By arranging your own flights to Bishkek (FRU), you have the flexibility to choose your airline (Turkish Airlines via Istanbul is a popular choice) and schedule. You might choose to arrive a day early to explore the Soviet-era architecture of Bishkek or visit the Ala Archa National Park. We handle the challenging logistics on the ground—the rugged winter transport, the language barrier, and the accommodation in remote villages—leaving you free to focus on the skiing.
