The Romanian Carpathians are one of Eastern Europe’s most captivating destinations for ski touring. This vast and rugged mountain range offers wild terrain, deep forests, and reliable snow conditions—especially in the higher zones, where snow cover lasts up to 120 days per year. The prime ski touring season runs from January to March, offering a perfect window for unforgettable backcountry adventures.
Well-known winter hubs such as Sinaia, Poiana Brașov, and the Bucegi Mountains provide lift-assisted access and ideal starting points for day tours or multi-day traverses. For those seeking quieter, more remote terrain, areas like Semenic and Arieșeni deliver unspoiled nature and an authentic mountain atmosphere. Whether you’re drawn to dramatic alpine ridges or serene forest descents, Romania’s Carpathians combine variety, solitude, and adventure in a truly unique ski touring setting.

This 7-day ski touring adventure in the Romanian Carpathians is designed for those who seek untouched nature, alpine solitude, and authentic culture. The tour explores two of the most stunning regions of the Southern Carpathians: the remote Retezat National Park with its glacial Lacul Bucura, and the dramatic Făgăraș Mountains, home to Lacul Bâlea and Romania’s highest alpine ridges.
Expect daily ascents and descents of around 1,000 meters, with ski touring routes that take you through wild valleys, open bowls, and ridgelines, far from the crowds. Touring days typically last around 6 hours, and require medium fitness and ski touring experience. You’ll be guided by a licensed local mountain guide, with an international guide accompanying the group for additional safety and support.
Between ski tours, you’ll experience the charm of romantic Transylvania, with its preserved medieval towns, fairytale castles, and rich cultural atmosphere. Evenings are spent in warm mountain lodges or guesthouses, enjoying local cuisine and hospitality.
Whether you’re drawn by the wilderness, the solitude, or the legendary land of Dracula, ski touring in the Carpathians promises raw beauty, diverse terrain, and a deep cultural layer—a true hidden gem of Europe.
