Experience the raw beauty of the “Land of Fire and Ice” on its most legendary trail.

This is not just a holiday; it is a true adventure into the wild. Our Trekking Iceland program takes you across the famous Laugavegur Trail, ranked among the 20 best hiking trails in the world. Starting from the rainbow-colored rhyolite mountains of Landmannalaugar, we trek South through steaming geothermal valleys, black volcanic deserts, and across massive glaciers, finally descending to the lush birch forests of Thorsmork and the dramatic Atlantic coastline at Skógar.

This is a Land Only package, giving you the flexibility to book your own preferred flights. We operate as a self-sufficient team: cooking our own meals together and sleeping in mountain huts or tents surrounded by nature. Whether we are soaking in a natural hot river or walking on fresh lava fields, every step of this journey connects you with the primal forces of the earth.

What to Expect

Expect to be awestruck by the constantly changing landscapes. One moment you are walking through geothermal steam vents, and the next you are crossing snowfields or black sands.

  • The Trail: We cover approximately 55–80 km over 6 days of hiking. The terrain is varied, with some steep ascents and river crossings (wading required).
  • Accommodation: We sleep in typical Icelandic mountain huts (dormitory style) or tents, depending on your booking preference and availability. Facilities are basic but cozy. In Reykjavík, we stay in a guesthouse/hostel.
  • Food & Gear: This is a “real” trek. We carry our own personal gear and share the load of communal food (unless luggage transfer is arranged). We cook breakfast and dinner together as a group, which creates a wonderful team spirit.
  • Weather: Icelandic weather is unpredictable. You might experience four seasons in one day—sun, rain, wind, and even snow. Proper waterproof gear is essential.
Itinerary

Day 1Arrival in Iceland

We arrive at Keflavík International Airport (KEF). A group transfer will take us to our accommodation in Reykjavík or directly towards the starting point of our adventure (depending on the schedule). We gather for a briefing on the days ahead, check our gear, and purchase fresh food supplies for the trek. The rest of the day is free to settle in.

Day 2Landmannalaugar & The Hot Springs

We board a specialized 4×4 bus to travel into the interior highlands. Our destination is Landmannalaugar, a geological wonderland of colorful rhyolite mountains and vast lava fields. Before starting our hike, we can enjoy a relaxing dip in the natural hot river right next to the mountain hut. We set up camp or settle into the hut and prepare for the first leg of our journey.

Day 3Trek to Hrafntinnusker – The Obsidian Fields

The trek begins! We hike through the geothermal wonders of Stórihver, passing steaming vents and bubbling mud pools. The trail leads us up to the glistening obsidian plateau of Hrafntinnusker (approx. 1100m). This is often the coldest part of the trek, where snow can persist year-round, offering spectacular views over the painted hills.

Day 4Hrafntinnusker to Álftavatn – The Swan Lake

Leaving the high plateau, we descend along the ridge, enjoying one of the most magnificent views in Iceland. Below us lies the green valley and the deep blue lake of Álftavatn (Swan Lake), surrounded by sharp volcanic peaks. We cross our first icy stream (prepare for cold feet!) and arrive at the picturesque hut by the lake.

Day 5Álftavatn to Emstrur – The Black Desert

Today the landscape changes dramatically. We leave the green valleys and enter a black volcanic desert of sand and stone, reminiscent of the Moon. We pass the surreal mountains of Hattafell and trek towards the Emstrur hut. In the evening, we can take a short side-hike to the magnificent Markarfljótsgljúfur Canyon, cut deep into the earth by glacial floods.

Day 6Emstrur to Thorsmork – The Valley of Thor

We continue our descent toward the coast. Slowly, vegetation returns—first mosses, then birch trees. We arrive in Thorsmork (Þórsmörk), a hidden valley surrounded by three glaciers. This lush green oasis is a stark contrast to the black sands we left behind. We celebrate completing the Laugavegur trail with a hearty dinner in this magical place.

Day 7Fimmvörðuháls Pass to Skógar

For the grand finale, we tackle the Fimmvörðuháls Pass, hiking between the Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull glaciers. We walk over the fresh lava formed during the 2010 eruption (Magni and Móði craters). The trail then descends past 25 stunning waterfalls along the Skógá River, ending at the mighty Skógafoss waterfall. Our bus meets us here to take us back to Reykjavík.

Day 8Departure

Transfer to Keflavík International Airport (KEF) for your return flight. (Note: Only one group transfer is provided; please align your flight time or arrange individual transport if needed).

  • Landmannalaugar: Hiking through the surreal, colorful rhyolite mountains and bathing in natural geothermal hot springs.
  • Hrafntinnusker: Crossing the high plateau where steam rises from the ice and obsidian glass covers the ground.
  • Thorsmork (Þórsmörk): A green oasis protected by glaciers, named after the thunder god Thor.
  • Fimmvörðuháls Pass: The dramatic climb between the Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull glaciers, featuring the newest lava fields from the 2010 eruption.
  • Skógar: Finishing the trek at one of Iceland’s most iconic and powerful waterfalls.
  • Reykjavík: Exploring the northernmost capital of the world and its vibrant culture.
