Ski touring in Eastern Turkey is a unique blend of sport and culture.
Welcome to Eastern Turkey! You arrive at Van Ferit Melen Airport (VAN) (usually via Istanbul). Our local team meets you and transfers you to our hotel in the city center. We check our equipment, have a welcome briefing about the snow conditions, and enjoy our first traditional Turkish dinner.
After breakfast, transfer to the village of Abali, the starting point for the ascent of Mount Artos. Starting at around 1,800 meters, the climb will take you to nearly 3,000 meters, offering spectacular views of the surrounding landscape and Lake Van. Experience a thrilling descent on fresh powder before returning to the hotel for dinner and an overnight stay.
Embark on a ski touring expedition to the higher peak of Mount Artos at 3,537 meters. The ascent begins on the northern side, with stunning lake views throughout. Enjoy a descent through wide snowy terrains, including a steep and narrow valley leading back to the base. Evening return to the hotel, dinner, and overnight stay.
Head towards Catak and the picturesque village of Onagil, the gateway to Mount Mevzi. The ascent along the western wall offers incredible views of the lake and surrounding mountains. The descent takes you through pristine, snow-covered landscapes. After the tour, return to the hotel for dinner and overnight accommodation.
Today is reserved for rest and exploration. Visit Gevas and take a boat trip to Akdamar Island to see the famous Armenian medieval church, one of the region’s most impressive cultural landmarks. After lunch in Gevas, explore the town or enjoy a serene sunset over Lake Van. Return to the hotel for dinner and an overnight stay.
Begin the day with a journey to the village of Boyunpinar, where the ascent of Kartaltepe begins. This mountain offers some of the most adrenaline-filled descents in the region. After the ski tour, return to the hotel for dinner, relaxation, and preparations for the next challenge.
Set out towards Bagriyanik, the starting point for the ascent of Mount Baset, one of the highest and most demanding peaks in the area. At 3,780 meters, Baset offers steep and technically challenging terrain. The ascent and descent follow the same path, with unforgettable views extending far over the surrounding mountains and Lake Van. Return to the hotel for dinner and overnight stay.
Transfer to Van Ferit Melen Airport (VAN) for your flight back home (usually via Istanbul). You leave with memories of deep snow, blue lakes, and warm Turkish hospitality..
When skiers think of Turkey, they often think of warm beaches or the bustling streets of Istanbul. But Eastern Turkey is a high-altitude playground that rivals the Alps or the Rockies. Dominated by the Armenian Highland, this region is home to massive volcanoes that catch the moisture from Lake Van, creating a unique microclimate perfect for ski touring. Our Ski Touring Turkey program is a journey into the wild, exploring peaks that few Westerners ever ski.
The centerpiece of our tour is Lake Van. At 1,640 meters above sea level, it is the largest soda lake in the world and never freezes. Skiing on the slopes of Mount Artos (3,537m) while looking down at this vast, deep blue expanse is a surreal experience. The contrast between the white snow and the blue water is a photographer’s dream. The lake also moderates the temperatures, often keeping the snow conditions safer and more stable than in the interior ranges.
The terrain here is volcanic, which is ideal for ski touring.
One of the joys of skiing in Turkey is the comfort. Unlike cramped mountain huts, we stay in a modern hotel in the vibrant city of Van. This means you have a private room, hot showers, and Wi-Fi every night. The food is a highlight—expect lavish breakfasts with olives, cheeses, and honey, and dinners featuring grilled meats, fresh salads, and endless cups of chai (tea). The Turkish people are incredibly welcoming to skiers, often inviting us for tea in the villages at the bottom of our runs.
Our Land Only package gives you the freedom to choose your flights. Most travelers fly into Istanbul (IST) and then connect to Van (VAN). This allows you to potentially stopover in Istanbul for a day or two to see the Hagia Sophia or the Grand Bazaar. We handle all the tricky logistics on the ground: the private transport to remote trailheads, the local permits, and the expert guiding. All you need to do is arrive with your skis and a sense of adventure.
