Among the Azores’ many spectacular landscapes, Mount Pico stands out as a hiker’s dream. Located on Pico Island, this is the highest peak in Portugal at an impressive 2,351 meters. A hike to the summit is an unforgettable experience, rewarding hikers with breathtaking views of the surrounding islands and the Atlantic Ocean.
The main hiking trail starts at around 1,200 meters above sea level, leading to the summit along a challenging yet rewarding route. The trail is approximately 3.4 km long and usually takes between 3 to 4 hours, depending on fitness levels. The terrain consists of volcanic rock and steep inclines, making proper hiking shoes and preparation essential. Along the way, hikers can admire various endemic plant species that thrive in this volcanic environment.
Upon arrival, we collect our rental vehicles and head to our accommodation. If time permits, we will take an introductory tour of the city.

Our first hike takes us to Sete Cidades, located on the western side of São Miguel. Known for its breathtaking twin lakes, this region offers one of the most stunning landscapes in the Azores. The 11 km trail leads us around two large lakes—Lagoa Azul and Lagoa Verde.

A beautiful forested area, Mata do Canário features stunning viewpoints and lush vegetation. The hike starts in the forest and winds through diverse terrain filled with endemic plants and rare bird species. The highlight of this trail is the stunning Lagoa do Canário.

Lagoa do Fogo, or “Lake of Fire,” is one of the most mesmerizing natural landmarks of the Azores. The 12 km hike takes us through a mix of steep slopes and grassy plains, leading to a volcanic crater lake surrounded by lush green hills.

Serra da Tronqueira on São Miguel is one of the wildest and most untouched regions of the Azores. This hike takes us through dense forests home to many endemic bird species, waterfalls cascading down cliffs, and dramatic volcanic formations.

On Faial Island, we visit the breathtaking Caldera Volcano. The hike begins in the Caldeira Natural Reserve, taking us through trails surrounded by rare ferns and pine trees. The highlight is reaching the crater rim, offering panoramic views of the surrounding islands.

Mount Pico on Pico Island is a must for mountain lovers. The highest peak in Portugal features dramatic volcanic landscapes, lava tunnels, and diverse flora. The demanding yet rewarding hike takes us to the summit, offering stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean and neighboring islands. Return flight to São Miguel Island.
