Itinerary

Day 1Arrival in Heraklion

Upon arrival in Heraklion, we collect our rental vehicles at the airport and begin our journey across the island. The drive toward Chania takes approximately two hours and offers a first introduction to Crete’s diverse landscapes, from coastal views to rolling hills and traditional villages. This transfer sets a relaxed tone for the days ahead, allowing time to settle in and begin experiencing the rhythm of the island.

Day 2Balos Lagoon

On the western side of the island, we visit one of the most enchanting corners of Crete, where nature reveals its most exotic character. A white sandy beach combined with turquoise-blue water creates the feeling of a tropical paradise. We set out on a hike along the cliffs and toward the islet of Gramvousa, where the remains of a 16th-century Venetian fortress can still be found. The rest of the day is dedicated to relaxing on the beach and swimming in the sea, before returning to Chania for the overnight stay.

Hike: approximately 10 km, 3–4 hours, 300 m elevation gain

Day 3Samaria Gorge

We continue our exploration of Crete in the Samaria Gorge*, without doubt one of the most impressive and scenic gorges on the island. Stretching for 16 km, the gorge cuts through the dramatic rocky landscape of the Lefka Ori (White Mountains). In some sections, the towering rock walls rise more than 500 meters above the trail, while the narrowest passage, known as the “Iron Gates” (Sidiroportes), measures only 3 meters in width.

The route leads through pine and cypress forests, along dry riverbeds, past steep rock faces and lush vegetation, before descending to the coastal village of Agia Roumeli. Here, we take time to rest and enjoy a meal in a local taverna, followed by a transfer back to our starting point.

Hike: 16 km, 5–7 hours

* Samaria Gorge is open from 1 May to 31 October.

Between 1 November and 30 April, the Samaria Gorge is closed. During this period, we visit the equally picturesque Agia Irini Gorge, a 7 km long route often referred to as the “younger sister” of Samaria. In the afternoon, we continue with a short hike to the ruins of the ancient city of Lissos, where we freely explore the remains of what was once an important ancient healing center.

Hike: 7 km + 3.5 km, 3–4 hours

Day 4Glyka Nera and Loutro

On the fourth day of our Hiking in Crete  journey, we explore the hidden corners of the island’s southern coast. The trail leads from Glyka Nera Beach to the village of Loutro and back. Along the way, we enjoy spectacular views of the Libyan Sea, steep coastal cliffs, and secluded bays where we can stop for a refreshing swim if conditions allow.

The village of Loutro is accessible only on foot or by boat and is known for its distinctive whitewashed houses set against the deep blue sea. Here, we take time to enjoy excellent Greek cuisine before returning along the same coastal path. After the hike, we continue by vehicle to Rethymno.

Hike: 10 km, 4 hours, 350 m elevation gain

Day 5Psiloritis – the highest peak of Crete

Psiloritis, also known as Mount Ida, rises to 2,456 meters and is the highest mountain on Crete. It lies in the heart of the Ida Geopark, which is listed as a UNESCO Global Geopark. The mountain is remarkable not only for its dramatic natural setting but also for its important role in Greek mythology, as it is believed to be the birthplace and childhood home of Zeus, the king of the gods. From the summit, we are rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views across the entire island.

Hike: 9 km, 5–6 hours, 900 m elevation gain

In the spring months, the summit may still be covered in snow. In case of unfavorable conditions, the program for this day will be replaced with the following alternative:

Preveli beach

Preveli is known for its unique combination of a river flowing through a palm forest, creating a tropical atmosphere in the heart of Crete. Crystal-clear waters and the rare opportunity to swim where fresh and salt water meet offer a completely different experience compared to anywhere else on the island.

Hike: 8 km, 2–3 hours

Day 6Rethymno and the flavours of Crete

We begin the day with a walk through the town of Rethymno, considered the cultural capital of Crete since the period of Venetian rule. The town impresses with its elegant Venetian palaces, Ottoman minarets, and the lively atmosphere of its narrow streets, where history and everyday life intertwine.

This is followed by a visit to a local olive oil mill and a winery, where we learn about the production process and enjoy a tasting that reveals the richness of Cretan olive oil and indigenous wine varieties.

In the afternoon, we return to nature and explore the Kritsa Gorge, a peaceful and scenic route where cypress trees, rocky formations, and untouched surroundings create a sense of true Cretan wilderness. The day concludes with an overnight stay in the area of Agios Nikolaos.

Hike: 7.5 km, 2–3 hours

Day 7Spinalonga peninsula and Agios Nikolaos

In the morning, we drive to the Spinalonga Peninsula, where we enjoy a short hike through this historically rich and scenic area. On our way back, we stop at Kolokytha Beach, often considered one of Crete’s hidden gems, with its clear waters and relaxed atmosphere.

The afternoon is dedicated to free time in Agios Nikolaos. This charming seaside town on the eastern coast of Crete is best known for its unique freshwater Lake Voulismeni, located in the heart of the town and surrounded by inviting tavernas and cafés. Agios Nikolaos blends a modern Mediterranean lifestyle with traditional character, making it an ideal place for relaxation and enjoying local cuisine.

Hike: 7.5 km, 2 hours, 150 m elevation gain

Day 8Closing the journey in Heraklion

Our adventurous week in Crete comes to an end. We spend our final day in Heraklion, where we experience the atmosphere of Crete’s vibrant capital while exploring its streets and historic quarters. The week concludes with a visit to the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion, home to remarkable artifacts that testify to Crete’s importance thousands of years ago. If time allows, we also visit the Palace of Knossos, the center of the Minoan civilization that flourished on Crete between 2000 and 1400 BC.

Afterwards, we head to Heraklion Airport, return the rental vehicles, and conclude the program. Participants then depart individually, flying back to their respective home destinations.
