Tour Details

This 2-day guided winter ascent offers a unique opportunity to experience Mount Triglav — Slovenia’s highest peak (2864 m) — in its most majestic and tranquil season. The route begins in the Krma Valley and leads through snow-covered alpine terrain to the Kredarica Hut, with the summit attempt on the second day. Designed for small groups of 1 to 2 people, the tour is suitable for physically fit adventurers aged 18+.

You’ll ascend nearly 2,000 meters and walk approximately 8 hours per day. While the winter climb is demanding, it’s not overly technical for those with basic mountaineering experience. The final section involves a via ferrata with the use of crampons, helmet, and ice axe — all under the guidance of an experienced local mountain guide.

What to Expect

Winter in the Slovenian Alps stretches from November to May, with deep snow, low temperatures, and unpredictable weather. Climbing Mount Triglav in these conditions transforms a popular summer hike into a true alpine challenge. Expect snow-covered trails, limited visibility at times, and exposure to harsh mountain elements.
The first day involves a long, steady ascent to the Kredarica Hut (2515 m), while the second day focuses on summiting Triglav — a section that requires crampons, an ice axe, and full attention to alpine safety. Nights are spent at Kredarica Hut, which is officially closed in winter but maintained by meteorologists who can provide a bed, blankets, and a hot meal. However, you must bring your own sleeping bag, and don’t expect any heating.

This climb is ideal for well-prepared hikers who want to experience the silence and beauty of the mountains in winter, far from the busy summer crowds. Your guide will ensure maximum safety and provide basic instruction in winter mountaineering techniques if needed.

Itinerary

Day 1Krma Valley (930 m) – Kredarica Hut (2515 m)

Your winter ascent begins in the peaceful Krma Valley. The trail leads through snowy forests and gradually climbs toward the Kredarica plateau. Depending on snow conditions, this stage takes around 6–7 hours. For most of the way, crampons and ice axe are not required, but trekking poles and gaiters are strongly recommended. The last part before the hut, known as Kalvarija, can be disorienting in deep snow and often tests your endurance.

Once you reach Kredarica, the evening is reserved for rest, a warm meal, and preparation for the summit push the following morning.

Day 2Kredarica Hut – Mt. Triglav (2864 m) – Return to Krma Valley

After an early breakfast, the real challenge begins. The final ascent to the summit of Triglav is steep, exposed, and requires full winter mountaineering gear. The route includes a via ferrata with fixed cables, icy slopes, and narrow ridgelines. Crampons, ice axe, and ideally a harness with a self-belaying system are necessary for this part. The climb is demanding and should not be attempted without prior experience or a certified mountain guide.

After reaching the summit and taking in the incredible winter panorama, you’ll begin the long descent back to the Krma Valley — a physical but incredibly rewarding journey that takes around 7 hours.
