Why choose Morocco for trekking? Only a short distance from Europe, Morocco offers a world of contrasts: bustling royal cities, vast deserts with sand dunes, and rugged mountain terrain. The Atlas Mountains, stretching 2,400 km from east to west, are a remote and unique mountain range where the Berber people still live a semi-nomadic lifestyle. Our trek takes us to Jebel Toubkal, the highest peak in North Africa, offering breathtaking views of the Sahara Desert. The combination of snow-capped peaks and desert landscapes is truly spectacular.
Morocco is a blend of African and Arab cultures, with its snake charmers, vibrant markets (souks), and aromatic mint tea. From the Mediterranean coast to the Atlantic shores, oases, and the vast Atlas highlands, Morocco provides an exotic experience full of adventure.
Afternoon transfer to Imlil, a charming mountain village where we will spend the night in a traditional guesthouse.
After breakfast, we complete our last preparations and load our mules with gear. Our trek begins in Tacheddirt, about 8 km from Imlil, passing through Tamatert Pass (2,279m). We ascend Likemet Pass (3,555m) (3 hours), where we enjoy stunning views of the Toubkal Massif, followed by a 3-hour descent to Azib Likemt, where we set up camp (overnight in tents).
A long but non-technical day through stunning landscapes. We reach Ououraine Pass (3,210m), where we get our first glimpse of Jebel Toubkal. In the afternoon, we arrive at Amsouzert, a remote Berber village where we stay in simple village huts (7 hours of hiking).
We explore small Berber villages on our way to Lake Ifni, the only lake in the region. We arrive around lunchtime, with the afternoon free for relaxation by the lake. Overnight stay in tents or a stone hut near the lake.
By this stage, we are well acclimatized, making the ascent easier. We start early in the morning due to the southern exposure of the slopes. We ascend to Ouanoums Pass (3,664m) before descending to Neltner Hut, arriving around 2 p.m. Overnight in the hut.
Before dawn, we begin our final ascent to the highest peak in North Africa. In about four hours, we reach Jebel Toubkal (4,167m), where we take in spectacular views of the entire Atlas range and Marrakech below. We descend back to Neltner Hut, followed by a 4-hour trek back to Imlil, where we stay with a local Berber family.
After breakfast, we transfer to Marrakech, arriving around noon. We check into a hotel in the old city center, near Jemaa el-Fnaa Square, the bustling heart of Marrakech. Afternoon city tour, followed by free time for shopping, exploring the souks, or enjoying a traditional Moroccan hammam. Dinner in a local restaurant.
If time allows, we explore Marrakech’s highlights, including the medina and markets. End of Program
