This hike is not only one of the most beautiful in Slovenia, but also one of the most diverse. Along the way, you’ll encounter:
Seven glacial lakes of varying size and color, including the famous Double Lake
Authentic mountain pastures and traditional shepherd huts
Rich alpine flora and fauna – including chamois, marmots, and even golden eagles
Stunning views over the Triglav range and Bohinj valley
The Slovenia 7 lakes hike is a must-do for any nature lover or photographer visiting the country.
Your journey begins in the scenic Triglav National Park, near Bohinj Lake. After a short transfer to the Blato alpine pasture, the trail leads you through peaceful and rare forest terrain to Planina pri Jezeru, a charming mountain pasture located by a small glacial lake.
As the forest opens up, you’ll enter a different world – a high alpine landscape of lush meadows, active shepherds’ huts, and wide horizons. In summer, these pastures are alive with local herders, traditional alpine dairy production, and grazing animals. It’s a rare glimpse into Slovenia’s living mountain culture.
The trail gradually becomes steeper as it winds its way toward the Štapce Saddle (1,851 m). From here, a breathtaking panorama opens up – down below lies the magnificent Seven Triglav Lakes Valley, with the shimmering Double Lake glistening in the foreground.
After a short descent, you’ll reach the Double Lake, one of the jewels of the Julian Alps. Here, you can enjoy a traditional Slovenian mountain lunch, relax by the water, and take in the serene alpine scenery.
The return trail follows a different route. You’ll descend toward the Black Lake, the lowest and most mysterious of the Seven Lakes, nestled in a dark forest basin. From there, an easy and well-maintained trail leads you back to Blato pasture, where your vehicle awaits.
