Mount Kazbek (5,054 m) is often called the most accessible 5,000-metre peak in the Caucasus. The route from Stepantsminda passes the Gergeti Trinity Church (2,170 m), climbs to camp at Altihut (3,000 m) and the Meteo Station (3,650 m), and includes a full acclimatisation day to about 4,000 m before the summit push. Summit day starts at 2–3 a.m. and takes 10–12 hours on the glacier.
Difficulty: demanding. The climb is not technical, but you walk on a glacier with crampons and the altitude is serious. Previous experience with crampons helps. Season: summer. Included: professional mountain guide, horses for the luggage, tents and all meals on the mountain. Crampons, ice axe and helmet can be rented.
