Trekking in Georgia: The Svaneti Region

Join us for an extraordinary adventure! Nestled in the towering peaks of the Caucasus, Svaneti is one of the most breathtaking and unspoiled destinations in the world. This hidden gem of Georgia offers a unique blend of pristine nature, rich cultural heritage, and warm hospitality.

Our journey takes us through a three-day trek from Mestia to Ushguli, the highest permanently inhabited settlement in Europe. Surrounded by the stunning peaks of Ushba, Tetnuldi, and Shkhara, the Svaneti region is an absolute must-visit for mountain lovers.

During this 8-day trekking experience, we will explore medieval villages, cross scenic mountain passes, and sleep in local guesthouses, where we will be treated to traditional Georgian cuisine. For those who prefer, optional baggage transport is available during the trek.

Why Trek in Georgia?

Georgia is a paradise for adventure seekers, nature lovers, and those eager to discover lesser-known history. Ancient towns, breathtaking landscapes, and the famous wine culture make it a perfect trekking destination.

The Caucasus Mountains offer some of the most diverse landscapes, from snow-capped peaks and glaciers to rolling green valleys. Svaneti, with its UNESCO-listed medieval watchtowers, provides a glimpse into Georgia’s fascinating history and traditions.

For those looking for a real off-the-grid adventure, this trek is the perfect way to disconnect from daily life and immerse in the authentic local culture.

What to Expect

The four-day trek from Mestia to Ushguli is undoubtedly among the most famous and popular treks overall. The well-trodden trail winds through traditional villages, valleys with rushing streams, across beautiful open slopes, and over scenic mountain passes. Based on years of experience, we have shortened the trek by one day and added an overnight stay in Ushguli, the highest permanently inhabited settlement in the region. There, we spend the afternoon strolling through the ancient villages, and in the evening, we visit the local Dede cinema to watch Dede — a film about life in Svaneti in the early 1990s. In addition to the three-day trek, we’ve included three day hikes beneath Georgia’s most stunning giants, Shkhara and Ushba.

Itinerary

Day 1Tbilisi/Kutaisi - Mestia

After landing, we immediately transfer to Mestia. Once we’ve completed the airport formalities and exchanged money for the local currency, we head toward the town of Zugdidi, where the ascent along the only road to Mestia begins. The journey continues past the Enguri Dam, with a stop for breakfast or coffe at a local roadside restaurant. Upon arrival in Mestia, we settle into our accommodation and then head out to explore the town’s streets, getting our first taste of the local culture and cuisine. We can visit a small local bazaar, several museums, and climb the ancient Svan towers. The day concludes with dinner at our accommodation, hosted by a local family.

Day 2Trekking Zabeshi - Adishi

On the first day of the trek, after breakfast, we take a morning transfer from Mestia to Zhabeshi. We begin our hike at the entrance to the village and then ascend toward the Tetnuldi ski resort.  This day involves significant elevation gain and descent, crossing high mountain pastures before reaching the medieval village of Adishi.

Distance: 11.6 km | Ascent: 909 m | Descent: 527 m

Day 3Trekking Adishi - Iprali

A spectacular day featuring a river crossing on horseback at the Hadišičala River, followed by a climb to the Chkhutnieri Pass (2,655m), offering breathtaking views of the Adiši Glacier. The descent leads us to Kalde, the only village that resisted Russian occupation in the 19th century, also known as the “Village of Heroes.”

Distance: 18.7 km, elevation gain: +860m, descent: -1069m

Day 4Trekking Iprari - Ushguli

The final day of the three-day trek between Mestia and Ushguli begins with a descent to the main Mestia–Ushguli road. After less than a kilometer, we cross a bridge and pass through the village of Davberi, returning to wide open meadows. The trail continues along forest paths high above the Enguri River, and once we rejoin the main road, we are soon greeted with magnificent views of Ushguli’s four villages. We stroll through the villages to our accommodation. The afternoon is free — you can rent a horse or simply wander through the muddy lanes, observing locals as they go about their daily routines. You can also watch Dede, a film shown in a unique cinema set inside one of the ancient towers.

Distance: 12.4 km | Ascent: 677 m | Descent: 436 m

Day 5Day hike from Ushguli

In the morning, we drive to the starting point of today’s beautiful hike. The trail follows the river, crossing meadows on the way to Lake Namkhami, where we are rewarded with views of the towering walls and numerous glaciers of Georgia’s highest peak, Shkhara. After a short break, we continue up to the Namkhami Ridge, reaching an altitude of 3,160 meters, and then descend along a circular route back to the lake and our starting point. We then transfer to Mestia, arriving in the late afternoon, where we enjoy a delicious dinner at our guesthouse.

Distance: 10.3 km | Ascent: 900 m | Descent: 900 m

Day 6 & 7Day Hikes Around Mestia

After breakfast on the day 6 we drive to the cross above Mestia, where we begin our ascent to the Koruldi Lakes, located at an altitude of 2,800 meters. From above the lakes, we can already see today’s goal — the ridge at 3,400 meters — offering stunning views of Ushba, the double-peaked mountain rising on the border with Russia, as well as the impressive Ushba glaciers. We then descend back to the cars and return to Mestia. The afternoon is free for shopping and exploring the town.

Distance: 8 km | Ascent: 1,000 m | Descent: 1,000 m

On the day 7, our final day of exploration of the Greater Caucasus, we drive to the village of Mazeri, where an easier hike awaits — to Georgia’s highest waterfall, Shdugra, which originates beneath the mighty Ushba. The same trail is also used by mountaineers heading to the Ushba and Shkhelda base camps. By prior arrangement, it’s possible to rent a horse that takes you almost all the way to the waterfall. After returning from the hike, we can relax with a drink in the beautiful natural surroundings beneath Ushba, then transfer back to Mestia for some last-minute shopping, dinner, and a late departure down the valley toward the airport.

Distance: 6.7 km | Ascent: 380 m | Descent: 380 m
