Triglav National Park Camping: Rules, Best Campsites & What You Need to Know

Can you camp in Triglav National Park?

Yes—but only in official campsites. While the Triglav National Park offers one of the most beautiful settings for outdoor experiences in Europe, wild camping (free camping) is strictly forbidden anywhere inside the park boundaries. That includes pitching a tent in the woods, sleeping in a van in a remote car park, or spending the night in nature reserves—even if you’re just staying for a few hours. Doing so can result in fines up to €1,000.

The reason is simple: Triglav National Park is a protected ecosystem with fragile alpine flora, wildlife, and waters. Controlled tourism ensures it stays wild, clean, and accessible for future generations. If you want to experience the real heart of the Julian Alps, the best way to do so is through official campsites that are thoughtfully placed and well-managed.

Why camping is still the best way to experience the park

Despite the rules, camping in Triglav National Park is one of the most rewarding ways to explore Slovenia’s mountains. You fall asleep under towering peaks, wake up with the sound of birds or rushing water, and step directly onto trails leading to waterfalls, lakes, and even the summit of Mount Triglav.

Many of the campsites are located either within park borders or just outside them, but always in perfect proximity to the trails. Whether you’re hiking to the Seven Lakes Valley, climbing Triglav, or walking the Soča Trail, these campgrounds serve as ideal basecamps for both short walks and multi-day treks.

5 Best Campsites in or near Triglav National Park

1. Camp Zlatorog Bohinj (Lake Bohinj)

Nestled on the shores of Lake Bohinj, this campsite is a true alpine paradise. With tent pitches just meters from the water and views over the Julian Alps, it’s hard to imagine a better starting point for hiking, swimming, kayaking, or simply relaxing in nature. From here, you can access trails to Savica waterfall, Vogel cable car, or head straight toward the Seven Lakes Valley or even Mount Triglav.

Best for: hikers aiming for Triglav or Triglav Lakes, wild swimming, kayaking

2. Camp Korita, Trenta Valley

Located deep in the Soča Valley, near the turquoise Soča River, Camp Korita is one of the most authentic and laid-back alpine camps in Slovenia. It lies directly on the Soča Trail and offers access to hiking, rafting, zip-lining, and fly fishing. The surroundings are wild, peaceful, and rich with alpine history and WWI heritage. The campsite features wooden cabins, tent platforms, and natural river pools.

Best for: Soča lovers, outdoor adrenaline sports, off-grid feel

3. Eco Camp Natura, Kranjska Gora

This eco-friendly site lies near the picturesque mountain town of Kranjska Gora, right on the edge of Triglav National Park. It offers wooden glamping huts, minimal-impact tent sites, and bike-friendly infrastructure. You’re close to the Vršič Pass, Russian Chapel, and dramatic alpine views. Perfect for families or travelers combining nature with light tourism.

Best for: cycling, light hiking, Vršič pass views, eco-conscious travelers

4. Camping Kamne, Dovje

A peaceful campsite between the Karavanke and Julian Alps, just a few steps from Vrata Valley—home to the north face of Triglav, one of the largest alpine walls in Europe. From here, you can hike into Vrata or Krma Valleys, both of which are common starting points for guided and unguided climbs to Triglav.

Best for: Triglav north wall, photographers, climbers, peace and quiet

5. Glamping Ribno, Bled

If you want a mix of comfort and nature, this glamping site near Lake Bled offers wooden huts with private bathrooms, saunas, and breakfast in the woods. While technically just outside the park, it’s an excellent base for day hikes into the Julian Alps, Bled Gorge, and short drives to Bohinj, Pokljuka, or Vintgar.

Best for: couples, short hiking holidays, glamping with lake views

Is wild camping allowed in Triglav National Park?

No. Not in a tent, not in a hammock, not in a campervan, and not in a sleeping bag under the stars. Even sleeping in your car overnight in park parking lots is prohibited. Rangers do patrol the area, and if you’re caught, you risk a fine between €200 and €1,000, depending on severity and location.

This applies not only to Triglav National Park, but also to most of Slovenia’s protected areas. Instead of wild camping, use mountain huts, official campsites, or plan guided multi-day hikes that include overnight stays.

Tips for responsible camping

  • Always book your spot in high season (July–August), especially in popular camps like Zlatorog or Korita.
  • Pack out all trash—even organic waste.
  • Respect quiet hours and keep campfires to designated areas (or avoid them entirely).
  • If you’re going into the mountains from a campsite, consider hiring a local guide or joining a small group trek to reduce impact and improve safety.
